David Blackburn, (b. West Yorkshire1939). Known as a landscape painter, and influenced by writers and scholars throughout his career, Blackburn uses the landscape as a starting point in his personal search for the transcendental. He studied textile design in London and later was greatly influenced by the artist and scholar, Gerhard Frankl, an Austrian-Jewish émigré who settled in London after losing his family in the Holocaust. Blackburn became interested in Australia as a direct result of his relationship with benefactor and friend, Sir Kenneth Clark and taught there for a number of years, using nature as his muse. In 1981, he was Visiting Professor at Georgetown University, in Washington D.C. and in 1989, had a Retrospective Exhibition at the Yale Centre for British Art.
